We are water

Dr Jennifer Craig evokes heart-centred archaeology practices. These practices involve work with community to expand the stories in the webs of relations of past experiences to include the animals, the spirits, and the other-than-human beings with traditional and scientific rigor. She aims to understand and interpret humans and WATER relationships.

DrJenny’s background is in the maritime and underwater cultural heritage of the Asia Pacific Region. She uses archaeology/museology methodologies to organize data and note patterns, and linguistic methodologies to study cultural perspectives.

Building on the archaeology excavation methodologies of the original heart-centred archaeology, she expands collections-based research and wade in watery connections with community.

With the inclusion of science and traditional knowledge her work aligns with broader public humanities goals of democratizing knowledge and centering Indigenous experiences in educational spaces. With CHamoru/Chamorro Pacific Islanders DrJenny co-created a model for how digital humanities platforms can support community-based research and participatory storytelling, intergenerational learning rooted in place-based knowledge, collaborative programming across island institutions, and archival visibility for marginalized narratives.
